The 2300 is a 2.3 L (139.6 cu in, 2,287 cc) inline-four engine produced by Chevrolet, a division of General Motors, for the 1971–1977 model years of the Chevrolet Vega and Chevrolet Monza.
This engine featured a die-cast aluminum alloy cylinder block made from an advanced alloy containing 17% silicon. During manufacturing, the cylinders were etched to expose the pure silicon particles, creating a durable wear surface for the pistons and eliminating the need for iron cylinder liners. The block was paired with cast iron main caps and a cast iron crankshaft for added strength. The cylinder head, also cast iron, was chosen for cost efficiency, structural durability, and enhanced camshaft bearing longevity.
